Usually, upgrading to the newest version of WordPress is highly recommended. From security fixes to bugs being worked out, each version of WordPress is safer than the last. But, with a major upgrade, like 3.0 you have to stop and think:
Is my theme WordPress 3.0 compatible?
Are all my plugins going to work in WordPress 3.0?
You can check these things by going to your theme and plugins’ download pages and checking the compatibility box in the right sidebar of the download page. If you got your plugin or theme somewhere other than the WordPress directory, go to the site you downloaded from and see if they have any updates letting you know if you’ll be ok with 3.0.
In the past, I’ve upgraded successfully, even when the plugins warned they might not be compatible. But, I try to make sure that the plugins I can’t live without are going to work. Sometimes this means waiting a few weeks to upgrade to the new version of WordPress, giving the plugin developers a little time to bring their tools up to date.
WordPress 3.0 is a big upgrade.
Wordpress and WordPress MU (multi-user) have been combined. There are new options for custom menus, and, new options to allow you to upgrade all your plugins at once. View this video of features new to WordPress 3.0.

I’m so glad that you wrote on this. I have yet to see many people talk about it, but I know it’s something concerning us all. I was so scared to hit the “Upgrade” button because I thought my blog was going to go crazy. With hesitation, I upgraded and it’s working just fine.
Claire,
I’m glad your upgrade went smoothly! I’ve upgraded my own site too and so far, so good. Very excited to see some of the new features of WordPress 3.0!
