Had you asked me last week how I thought 2009 treated me and my blog, I probably would have answered “ok.” Not bad, but not great either. This week? A totally different story.
No, I didn’t get a sudden mass subscription to my newsletter, or make the front page of Digg. I counted my blessings. I started out by trying to make a post of goals I’d accomplished. It was then I realized my puny goals had been way outdone and my list of accomplishments gave me a huge boost of confidence.
I’m now a firm believer in looking back before planning ahead.
We normally say “the past is the past… look to the future!” and while it’s true that we can’t change the past, we can learn from it. Or, in my case, be encouraged by it.
So, here’s the challenge!
I want you, as a blogger, to write down what it was you wanted to happen last year. Check off the things you accomplished. On those un-done items, stop to think about why they didn’t happen, decide if you want to bump them to the new year, and move on! Write down the things you hadn’t planned on too… an unexpected interview that brought you some publicity and traffic, maybe the first podcast you ever did, reaching 100 + email subscribers, anything really that seemed momumental at the time…
Write. It. Down.
Why? Because when you add up all those little things, you’ll have a new view of the past. It will motivate you to greater things for the future, and you’ll feel blessed!
What do you feel is your single, most important, accomplishment of 2009?
How about your top three?
What are your top 3 goals for the new year?

So true! You know I”m all about “counting your blessings”.
bloominglater,
I’m sorry 2009 was a painful year for you. While never pleasant at the time, pain often brings growth later on.
Here’s hoping your 2010 is way better than your expect or plan for!!
this is a great article. i surf the web looking for good ideas to improve my life and then determine if i should implement them. this is definitely going on my list, even though i have been very hesitant to look back – too painful. but, i think that this is going to be important, especially to realize that no matter where i am now, i’m not where i was and that is a good thing. thanks for this!
