Safe driving is on everyone’s mind these days. As more and more states adopt driving requirements for texting and talking on cell phones, hands-free is the way to go.
One company is taking on the challenge. Motorola has developed a mobile Android™ application whereby travelers will be able to look up the state they are traveling to for their hands-free laws. You will be able to download the Smart Hands-Free application from Android Market™. The MotoSpeak™ app works with any RIM and Android devices.
“Education is critical to decrease distracted driving” said Wayne White, corporate vice president, Companion Products, Motorola Mobile Devices. “We are taking our Get Smarter message to the streets this summer to provide consumers with important tools for staying focused on driving and avoiding the urge to look at distracting text messages.”

I was also able to review and test drive the Motorola H17txt with MotoSpeak™, a headset (bluetooth device that fits in your ear just like they all do) that reads text messages to consumers in real time, so they can keep their eyes on the road. It allows me to customize an automated response letting the sender know I will respond once they have reached their destination. H17txt can even translate 150 acronyms such as lol, btw and l8r when the text message is read aloud. How cool is that!
It was fairly easy to use. I know when even I can set it up with my cell phone in a matter of minutes that honestly anyone can. I am still remote control challenged on occasion.
OK, most of the time.
I gave it a shot on a long trip pulling the horse trailer. That is definitely a time when you need both hands and eyes working the road. But with kids home who just call and text over and over if you don’t respond right away, the auto responder feature came in handy.
