“Gesundheit!”
“Bless you!”
Or, if you are a Seinfeld fan, “You are SO good looking!”
Sneezing. We all do it. What we don’t all do, however, is practice proper sneezing etiquette. Most people cover their mouths and noses with their hands to stop the spread of germs while sneezing. Unfortunately, we then go on to touch doorknobs and other common surfaces. The next person to touch that surface is the lucky recipient of our germs! Thus, viruses and bacteria spread readily through schools, workplaces, and other public areas.
Oh, yes…and homes.
There is a simple fix for this that would greatly reduce the spread of germs. The Centers for Disease Control recommends it, and so do I (how is that for lumping myself in with The Big Dogs?).
The solution? Sneeze into the inside of your elbow. The first time I saw someone do that, I thought, “How uncouth!” But then a split second later I realized that it was, in fact, quite couth.
Sneezing into your elbow goes a long way towards reducing the amount of germs we share. Interested in watch a short, award-winning, and super entertaining video that illustrates proper elbow-sneezing etiquette? I just happen to know one.
By the way, you don’t need someone to sneeze to tell them that they are SO good looking!

no wonder I hang out there … that is brilliant and I will train all in our home to do the same!!
I get my daughter to do this when she coughs and sneezes – and I tend to cough or sneeze into my shoulder – for exactly the reasons you state.
The fact that other people may not do it is why I am practically OCD about handwashing, and I have purell on me at all times lol!
Hi Girl,
Yeah, I’m living in Stockholm, Sweden and we do sneezing between elbows.
As an asian, well, filipina, good etiquette isn’t that appealling, though. But in our youth our parents learnt us to sneeze of to cough the way the Scandinavians too.
Apart, we’re seldom get colds/flu in the countryside.
Anyways, fantastic tips, to those who don’t think the right way, right?
Keep up your good work!
Have a wonderful EASTER!
