One of the first posts I wrote for the Healthy Bliss Channel was my son’s allergies and some of the changes we made because of them (Asthma, Allergies, and Dust Mites):
- Removed stuffed animals and curtains from his bedroom
- Replaced the carpeting with wood flooring
- Covered his bedding with allergen covers
Why allergen covers?
Covering bedding with protectors can help reduce allergen triggers in the bedroom. According to Aller-Ease, “A typical unprotected mattress may have anywhere from 10,000 to 10 million dust mites inside.”
The American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology states that approximately 70% of people with asthma also suffer from allergies.
The most common form of asthma is allergic asthma. It is triggered by inhaling allergens such as the protein found in dust mite and cockroach droppings, pet dander, pollen, and mold. Asthma sufferers sensitive to dust mite allergens can benefit from limiting exposure to common household allergy triggers.
This is why using allergen covers on my son’s bedding helped so much!
When my daughter was born we took no chances and immediately outfitted her bedding with allergen covers. Now you can’t find a pillow in my house without a cover on it.
Because allergy sufferers are not alike, you have to find just the right cover/ barrier for protecting against your specific allergies.

I was just reading on the Aller-Ease website about pillows. They stated that ten percent of an unprotected pillow’s weight is comprised of allergen particles after two years. Wow! That is pretty scary. I think I’ll be headed out to the store pretty quickly to get some new pillows! Thanks for offering this contest!
Yoikes!
“A typical unprotected mattress may have anywhere from 10,000 to 10 million dust mites inside. An unprotected pillow increases in weight 10% every two years due to dust mites and dust mite feces.”
Ooooh- no more procrastinating about changing my pillow! Might be good to put this on the Daylight Savings time clock or make gifting pillows a holiday tradition- something. I see a National Change Your Pillow day in our future suddenly!
I learned that there are a LOT more products available than the Aller-ease pillowcases I bought at Walmart earlier. We do the same lifestyle modifications as you did, but now I see that there are many more options I can consider.

I visited Aller-Ease. I learned that your mattresses actually gain pounds from allergens. Also, didn’t know about putting items in the freezer to kill allergens. My husband & son suffer from allergies, I would love to have one of these covers!

OMG “The average bed can contain up to 10 million dust mites and mattresses can double in weight every 10 years due to microscopic allergens that accumulate inside.”
That is shocking as well as incredibly disgusting.
Good grief – learned more than I want to know. The stats about the pillows shocked me. As someone with asthma – this would be great! Thanks!

I learned that I need to wash my linens in HOT HOT water 130F instead of the cold or warm water I was using to save money and to be more green.
