Is there mercury in your soda? How about your cereal?
According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, a new study published in Environmental Health shows evidence that foods containing corn syrup may also contain small amounts of mercury. Mercury has been linked to a number of health and developmental issues in adults and children, and intake should be limited.
While we tend to associate mercury with fish consumption and often hear recommendations to limit how much mercury-containing fish we eat, it appears that soda and candy, along with a number of other foods you might not even suspect, may be adding to your mercury consumption.
While the study was small and more research will need to be completed, this might just be another good reason to eat fewer processed foods containing high-fructose corn syrup.
