I often get the question, "I’m not active AT ALL. What do I do to get started?"
Here’s the great news: Write. That’s right! You don’t have to run out and buy anything, you don’t have to join a gym, start sweating or get sore. you need to write.
First, start out with five broad goals you want to meet. For example, here are mine:
1. Lose 10 pounds of fat.
2. Gain strength in arms.
3. Lose inches off waist.
4. Gain stamina.
5. Have more energy.
Great! Your list looks a lot like mine, doesn’t it? So, there we go. Our first five goals list. This
is where you’re stuck again because, "Leslie? I know that. I know what I WANT to do. I’m asking you HOW DO I DO THAT."
Right, that’s the next list.
Next you’ll write five very practical ways in which you plan to meet those five goals. For example:
1. Walk or use eliptical 2-3X week for 20 minutes.
2. Lift free weights, upper body 2-3x week.
3. Eat small meals throughout the day.
4. Stretch 2x week.
5. Drink 64 ounces of water a day.
Now I have some very concrete goals I can post on my fridge for this week. Tomorrow I’m lifting weights before the kids are up so I can meet goal #2.
What are your goals? How are you going to meet them? Give me five goals and five actions in the forums. Join me, please? I don’t want to be the only one with amazing arms on the beach this summer.

This is something that I’ve just recently begun as well. I just turned 45 and my doctor says I need to lose 50 lbs. and get my blood pressure down. *Sigh*
My wonderful husband gave me a 6-month membership to the new gym in town (I asked for one). He said if I use it he will renew it for another year. So far using the gym hasn’t been an issue…
I’ve been taking a cardio/weight class 2x/week – to be 3x once school is out for the summer. I’ve also been taking a yoga class 1x/week and then hit the cardio machines 2x-3x/week. Now if I could just get my eating under control. I HATE PMS CRAVINGS!
This is pretty much exactly how I have approached my fitness goals this year. I promised myself I would take babysteps. First it was “Actually go to the gym and sign up.” Then it was “do something three times a week– no matter how small.” I started by walking a mile on the indoor track. Since then I have added varying tasks to my routine. I recently conquered my fear of group fitness classes. Now? I am going four-five times per week and am signing up for a 5k in April. Dayum. I was a total and complete couch potato in January.
GiantsPrincess I hear ya! I’ve learned that I can’t NOT have chocolate, so I have a little bit every night. It’s the only thing I really want and I tend to eat until I have some so it’s much better if I just HAVE some. But just a little. It’s yummy. Then I’m done.
DBN, AWESOME!!! I’m so proud! Take pics and share them with us, ok?
