What’s blue on the outside, savory on the inside and is known to make even the grumpiest of children and people smile? You’ve got it: blueberries and July is National Blueberry Month.
I admit I’ve never really been a fan of blueberries. Why? I wasn’t too fond of the concept of eating anything blue. Keep in mind, I grew up in the Virgin Islands with a wealth of exotic and colorful fruits ranging from mouthwatering greens to succulent yellows and even savory browns, but no blue. Still, I overcame my blue-phobia and haven’t looked back since.
Blueberries are Anti-Oxidant Rich
According to Dr. Kristie Leong, blueberries are rich in anti-oxidant compounds that help protect the brain from age-related deterioration. In her article, she shares that blueberries, and other berries, are a good source of compounds such as polyphenolics that block inflammation and protect against cell damage.
Blueberries have Fiber and Vitamin C
Likewise, blueberries are rich in fiber and Vitamin C both of which are vital to help us maintain a healthy digestive system as well as a healthy immune structure. Blueberries also contain high amounts of minerals like potassium and calcium. Did you know that potassium is an important element of cell and body fluids and helps to preserve heart rate and blood pressure?
Blueberries may be small but they pack a powerful anti-oxidant punch. They’re sweet, delicious and great for the body, inside and out. Blueberries have been proven to boost memory and can help prevent degenerative heart diseases. Plus they taste amazing!
In honor of National Blueberry Month, go out and get blue. Your skin will thank you and so will your heart.
