After reading about and researching Hazelwood products and their possible benefits, Hazelaid offered me the opportunity to test the theories with my own body. Hazelwood believers claim that it reduces acid in the body by absorbing into the pieces of wood. As a person who suffers from many of the ailments that are possibly relater to Acidosis (excess acid in the body), I was a ready and willing participant.
Hazelwood is the wood of Hazel trees that grow indigenously in Canada. The wood has classically used for relieving teething pain. It is thought that the pain associated with dental discomforts is associated with excess acidity produced through the process. Children wore the wooden beads around their necks – it was not chewed. It also became used for other pain relief and became combined with other materials known for their own medicinal properties, such as amber.
I, myself, suffer from migraines, skin and food sensitivities, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and painful and extended menstrual cycles. Other symptoms that Hazelwood may help treat are Eczema, teething pain, digestion problems, acid reflux, heart burn and arthritis among other things. Hazelaid recommend wearing the jewelry constantly, only removing it if you will be using lots of soap or lotions (like in the shower). The wooden beads should be against the skin and the more exposure to the skin, the better. You can see relief in as little as twenty-four to forty-eight hours but the company says to allow up to two weeks to see full results. You will see some deterioration to the ends of the beads (darkening) as the wood absorbs acidity from your body. Hazelwood jewelry can be worn up to twelve months without replacement depending on the condition of your body and how much work the beads are doing.
I was given a bracelet that was made of Hazlewood beads interspersed with beads made of amber. I wore it as an anklet to protect it from my children. I noticed within the first day that my usual migraine that begins with the week before my period significantly lessened in intensity and was much more manageable. I also noticed within the first week that I was sleeping more soundly. I normally wake up every couple of hours on my own in addition to when my young children wake during the night, so I am always a little sleep deprived. However, while wearing this bracelet I have been sleeping very soundly in between my children’s wakeful periods; almost never waking on my own.
I also have experienced two menstrual cycles since beginning my trial and they have been shorter and much, much less painful. Since having my children they have been regular but have been extended for periods of up to 17 days and very heavy and painful. I often have cramping, bloating and back pain through my entire period. I knew what to expect and braced myself for the discomfort but it didn’t show up! I had very little cramping and bloating and virtually no back pain. The bleeding was lighter, and while it was still a longer period than I would like, it was not as uncomfortable as usual.
I can only speak from my own experience, but I would recommend Hazlewood jewelry to others if they suffered from similar symptoms as I do. As a bonus to my experiment, Hazelaid has offered a discount to all Blissfully Domestic readers!
