You may not know it, but there is a lot of misinformation floating around the Web.
I’m not kidding. This is totally. True.
Of course, this applies to health related topics as well. That’s why I thought I’d share with you a few of my favorite go-to places…sites where I know I can trust the information to be as up-to-date and scientifically sound as possible.*
Mayo Clinic - it doesn’t get much more state-of the art medicine than the Mayo Clinic, and this is a great website for patients and medical people alike. But don’t be intimidated…it’s readily digestible (and two of the top stories for today are things I wrote about here! How cool is that?).
Medicine Net – this site claims to be physicians bringing their knowledge to you. I do find it to be current…although, it seems to weigh a bit heavily on the, "Do you have this?" articles. Still, a great resource.
Health Central - Dr. Dean Edell’s site; for some reason, I find him very trustworthy. His site hasn’t let me down.
Medline Plus - Medline was to me as a medical student what…well, BD is to us now! An amalgamation of information and resources geared towards our needs. Medline Plus is a similar site, but with health consumers as the target audience. It is provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the NIH.
*That being said, medicine is as much an art as a science, and science is in many ways art, too. In other words…medicine is ever-evolving. As with anything, be a wary and discerning consumer.

I have heard that “cyber-chondria” (paranoia developed by looking online for a diagnosis, and getting anxious at all the possible illnesses you could have) is getting more prevalent. The internet can be such a great resource, but you are right that medicine is an art. Once I typed in “headache” as my symptom and the first diagnosis was cancer!
