When people think about McDonald’s there are several things that immediately come to mind. We think of the restaurants prominent symbol: golden arches. We think of its catch phrase “ba da, da, da, daaa, I’m loving it,” or my personal favorite: “two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.”
In recent years, however, McDonald’s has been endeavoring to become more well known for healthier menu options, particularly it’s Happy Meal menus.
Happy Meal Changes – Less Fries, More Fruit (and Veggies)
Yesterday, McDonald’s restaurants announced its plans to add a serving of fruit and vegetables to its Happy Meals while reducing its french fry portions. According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel, the french fry portions will drop from 2.4 ounces (it’s current size) to just over 1 ounce. The new meals could account for as much as a 20 percent reduction in calories (depending on the order).

The menu changes which will take effect in September, initially for select markets. In April, however, it is expected that all 14,000 restaurants will adopt the change. Fruit or veggie options could include sliced apples, mandarin oranges, sliced pineapple, carrots, or raisins (subject to seasonal availability).
The New Happy Meal – Helping to Fight Childhood Obesity?
At a time where childhood obesity concerns are at the forefront of debates and demands for reform, McDonald’s choice to revamp its Happy Meal is right on time. The new changes could be seen as a welcomed step in the right direction to helping parents make healthier choices when ordering food on the go. According to Jane Fields, President of McDonald’s USA, the new Happy Meal helps “people feel good about about the food options that are served at McDonald’s.” Healthier options can lead to healthier choices.
As a parent who enjoys living within her budget, eating out is not a luxury we enjoy very often. When we dine out, we prefer to eat at restaurants that offer a variety of healthy food choices. Knowing that there are healthier alternatives than the standard burger and fries, helps make dining out much easier for parents. While I’m well past the Happy Meal stage, I for one could go for a serving (or two) of chilled, sliced pineapples any day. Who’s with me?
