As the mom of a ‘tween who most definitely has some teeth straightening in his future, I was thrilled when my eyes were recently opened about Invisalign Teen. I had been suffering under a lot of misconceptions regarding this product, but now that I’ve got my facts straight about teeth straightening, I know it is (literally and figuratively) the clear alternative to braces.
Invisalign can be used even when major correction is needed. Unlike what you’ve likely heard, rare is the case in which Invisalign isn’t a viable alternative to traditional metal braces. If you’ve been told otherwise by a Dentist or Orthodontist, this just might be because they haven’t been trained in the proprietary Invisalign technology, and thus don’t want to send your business elsewhere. Don’t be afraid to get a second (or third) opinion.
Correction is achieved by a series of lightweight plastic trays that guide the teeth into the desired position. No more biweekly metal brace tightening! In fact, patients need far less office visits with Invisalign…generally every six weeks. That’s music to this busy parent’s ears!
The aligners can be taken out for eating; no more banning of apples and other forbidden foods as with metal braces. Also, without the wire and gears in the way during brushing and flossing, normal healthy dental hygiene can be maintained while treatment proceeds. Ever try flossing with metal braces? I did, and it was near impossible.
Invisalign is far more comfortable, for many reasons. As the series of aligners are designed specifically to move each tooth a quarter of a millimeter per tray, the adjustments are very precise and far less painful than the tightening of wires every other week. Also, there aren’t any wires or brackets poking into mouth and gums (thus is far kinder on the interior of your mouth when accidents happen as well). If the patient plays a wind or horn musical instrument, Invisalign makes continuing in that activity much easier.
No more Brace Face comments. Invisalign is virtually invisible, helping teens with their self-esteem and confidence. That’s a win right there.
The cost of Invisalign is comparable to traditional braces. If your dental insurance covers braces, it will cover Invisalign. Pricing is up to individual dental care providers, so one more reason to get second opinions!
I’m thrilled that I was able to learn about this product; it wasn’t offered as an option by my son’s Orthodontist. I’ll most definitely be making appointments for consultations with Invisalign trained Orthodontists before I make any decisions.
In the interest of full disclosure, I learned about this at an Invisalign sponsored event. There were reps from Invisalign there, but there was also a wonderful Orthodontist who donated her Saturday (not compensated in any manner) to explain why she is such a huge fan of this product; she brought along some of her patients as well. Thanks to all!

I think Invisalign is a great idea, looks so much better than traditional braces.
Invisalign sounds awesome for adults or MAYBE older teens but I bet younger teens will not wear them as much as they need to and well also loose them more frequently judging by how well teenagers hold on to their retainers. Since they are not less expensive, I think I’d rather stick with the orthodontia treatment that can’t get left behind ‘by accident’
Actually, this hasn’t really been a problem; Invisalign Teen has a few product differences from regular ol’ Invisalign to address these issues.
One of them is that they have “compliance indicators.” These are little blue dots (made from food-grade vegetable dye) on the back that fade with wear. If the teen isn’t wearing the aligners, that is readily discernible by the color of the indicator.
Interestingly, the Orthodontist who was volunteering her Saturday explained how this works in her practice. First of all, studies show OVERWHELMINGLY that teens don’t want braces (I’ve got a focus group of one in my home that concurs). The Orthodontist tells her Invisalign teen patients that if they don’t wear their trays as prescribed, she will switch them to metal braces instead. The desire to NOT have braces overwhelms any temptation to slack on wearing the trays.
This compliance leads to routine which, in turn, results in less losses than one might think. However, accidents can happen…and Invisalign Teen addresses this by offering six free replacement trays. Happily for parents, Invisalign Teen has found that only 2% of teens lose a tray.
And the Orthodontist who was at the event, has only had to make good on her threat of ditching Invisalign Teen for traditional braces once.
