How to Announce Your Pregnancy at Christmas

My grandfather always had one last BIG Christmas surprise up his sleeve. It was a biggie; and you always hoped it was for you! The Christmas spirit not only brings out a generous spirit in most people, but also it brings out a shrewd spirit in me. Like my grandfather, I want to have the biggest surprise gift at our family gathering. I love to have the perfect plan and I know it’s a good one if it makes my mom cry. This year, I’ve got the trump card.

My husband and I are thrilled that we are expecting. This is not our first child, but we want to make it special and have our announcement at Christmas. Here are some ideas for you if you are looking to do the same thing:

  • Wrap a copy of “God’s Little Instruction Book for Grandparents” if the Grandparents are first-timers.
  • Frame a picture of the ultrasound for all to see.
  • Give a “Grandparents” picture frame with a typed note included that says, “Baby to join on (your due date)”
  • Wrap a bow around your tummy and walk around until someone figures it out!
  • Have a gift not addressed to anyone that’s labeled “To Be Opened on (your due date)” and include baby shoes or a bottle. (You might have to nudge someone to open this one!)
  • Have older children wear a shirt that says, “I’m the big brother/ sister.”
  • Wrap a stork ornament and have it be a gift from your husband to you for you to open in front of your family.

We have used a couple of those in the past, but this year we are going to try something new! I took a picture of our children holding up signs welcoming the new addition. Then I put it into the annual picture calendar I make for the family in the month that the baby is due!

I’m so excited for my parents and in-laws to flip through the calendar to see the news. I can’t wait for the big secret to be revealed!

Christmas was made special by the birth of Christ. For me, that makes sharing the news of an upcoming birth even more meaningful and exciting. The countdown is on until the big day and as I wrap my other presents I know I have one more tucked away, hiding safely until that perfect moment that will surely make my mom cry.

What are your fun ideas for announcing pregnancy (not just at Christmas, but any time of the year)?

My husband and I had the joy of doing this same thing back in 2003 for Christmas. I know this is a little late but some one might use it some day or for another special occasion. We went out and bought a pair of pink booties and blue booties and then just added one of each to a box b/c we didn’t know what we were having. And wrapped it in a box with a note that said “these little shoes will be filled by a little one loved so very much in July 2004.” That was our idea. And my parents and in-laws flipped out.

I had pink and blue M&M’s printed that had a message. Half of them said “Coming Soon” and half of them said “Baby ____” with our last name. We filled small silver plated gumball machines with the special M&M’s and gave one to each set of grandparents.

I have another great food related way to share too, but I’m not telling until I get to use it first….hopefully.

For our next one, we are going to take a group of family pictures in which I am wearing a shirt that says “mommy to 3” and upload them as usual to snapfish and see who is the first to catch on. 😀

When we were expecting our first, we wrapped up ornaments that said “#1 Grandma” or “#1 Grandpa” and a mug that said something about Great Grandma.

It was great watching them read the item, notice a look of confusion pass across their face, until the big “aha!” moment. Fun, fun!

I personally did the grandparents picture frame and put a picture of the positive pee stick in it! 🙂 I was lucky enough to have my parents and inlaws over at the same time. It was great..
