Ten Fun Family Activities for Fall

Fall Family Fun

I LOVE this time of year. Autumn makes me happy, with its crunchy leaves and harvest vegetables and college football. And with a relief from the sometimes oppressive heat of the summer months, it’s an opportunity to head outside to enjoy some beautiful weather with your family!

  1. Rake up big piles of leaves and JUMP in them. Adults, too!
  2. Go to a real pumpkin patch to pick out the family pumpkins. Then go home and carve/decorate them together.
  3. Pack up a thermos of warm apple cider and go for a hayride! If you can’t find one offered in your community, make your own. Fine someone with a truck, pile some bales of hay in the back and hop on! (Be safe, of course. Never ride unbuckled on roads. Old farm paths are the best!)
  4. Go to an orchard for apple-picking. Make some apple pies together and share with neighbors and friends.
  5. Stuff your own scarecrow! Get daddy’s old pants and shirts and cram them full of hay. Paint a fun face on a burlap-covered ball or a pumpkin. Take everyone’s picture with the scarecrow to remember the fun!
  6. Take a walk through the woods and pick up some interesting leaves to take home for craft time (leaf rubbings with crayons or pressing between wax paper sheets for suncatchers in the window).
  7. Fill a barrel with water and apples (careful with younger kids around the water) and have your own bobbing for apples contest.
  8. Bake mini loaves of pumpkin bread and take to elderly neighbors or a local retirement home.
  9. Make birdfeeder ornaments by layering peanut butter and sunflower seeds on pinecones. Hang them on low branches to watch the birds enjoy them.
  10. Have a tailgate party in your driveway, and head to your local high school football game together. Talk about the game and sportsmanship afterwards over a treat!

What are some of your family’s favorite fall traditions/activities?

Thanks for these great ideas. I always need good “fresh” tips for things to do with my boys. They love birds, so we will be doing #9 soon. Thanks!
